i wish that my two girls would know… – the share your wish | shine your light project

Meet the sweet S family, the latest recipient of The Share Your Wish | Shine Your Light Project. This is another family with an amazing story that will inspire you, and their shoot was so refreshing for me. It’s a little different than what I typically do, but that’s just one of many reasons why it was refreshing. I showed up to document their REAL life and I followed them around in their house to capture the tidbits of a morning in their home. I met their favorite dollies and pet alligator, I witnessed their favorite pastime of jumping on the guest bed and playing peek-a-boo in the pillows, I got to admire two little princesses running around in their finest dresses for some donut holes and baking in the kitchen, all the while being shepherded around by mom, Ashley, who has a special wish for her two little girls…

A year ago, I was diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis).  That date marked a finite change in my life.  My view on how I see my life now is 200% different than how I saw it prior to that date.  It’s been an emotionally challenging year – filled with fear, sadness, and sometimes bitterness.  One thought that has been consistent throughout this new “journey” and new chapter in my life is how God faithfully uses the bad in my life to somehow make good.  I’ve always known this was true, but sometimes it does take a life altering event to make it more apparent. I’ve been connected to more people over this past year that I would never have been connected with before my diagnosis. My wish is that my two young girls know that God always uses the Bad to make Good.

Sometimes I question “why me”, “why now”; I’m 32 years old with two very, very small children.  I have learned to try and stop questioning the why’s, and instead, just move forward with my life and strive to be a wonderful mom/friend/wife/daughter and play the cards I’ve been dealt.  We all have struggles, and my sincere wish is that my girls know to make the most of the situation they’ve been given in life, and that Good will always come from the Bad .. we just have to find it.

You’ll notice this is delivered all in black -and-white and you may be asking why, especially since you know how much I love color and since it is one of the key facets of my style. It’s because to me, there’s nothing better than a black-and-white image to capture the raw emotion of a moment and to capture the magnitude of life. I hope you leave FEELING this session and being THANKFUL for the life that you live!

Winnie - What a touching story and what an attitude this mom has chosen. I felt like I knew this family from these beautiful pictures!

Cathy - Love it Ash!! Great pictures.. I’m proud of you for how you are handling what you have been dealt. XOXO

Katherine - I’ve known Ashley since she was 10, and she’s been my stepsister since she was 12…I’ve watched her grow into a beautiful woman, an amazing mother, and a great friend. Age and geographic differences make it hard for us to be as close as I would like, but watching her face these challenges with such grace and bravery remind me always how blessed I am to have her in my life.

Lara Cassidy - Beautiful pictures of a truly beautiful family! Love you Ashley!!!!!!

Lori McCoy - To see my baby sister on a daily basis living her life with such joy and strength and happiness is a true inspiration to me and to everyone that knows her. I am so proud of her! xoxo

Susan Teggatz - Ashley, I loved reading your story and the pictures are just beautiful. You are a real inspiration to me as I am beginning to deal with my own set of cards that have been dealt. God will see us through and give us the strength we need. Please let me know if I can ever be of help. I’m right up the way. Susan

mr. and miss chevy

Look at how little brother and sister brought this red truck to life! Little did I know that all things “Chevrolet” are near and dear to Dad’s family, but now am I even more glad that I drug big sister out of the back of their car for a few quick shots! Who could resist those purple rain boots and sassy get-up even though it was little brother’s big day? I love this duo and Mr. T has further won me over with his killer lashes and lips that were just as evident at 3 months old. These 2 are just the cutest!!

cici & ryann spring release – miss m

I knew this shoot HAD to involve a series of extra-special wings considering Cici & Ryann is all about butterflies, but what else says DREAM better than WINGS?! And if you know this girl like I do (yes, she belongs to me!), then the wings are SO perfect for and her colorful personality and the free spirit that she is.

Miss M is also very creative and artistic, and she helped me make these wings up one afternoon in preparation for the shoot. It was simple, but quite the time-intensive project, so a dear friend stepped in to help when M gave out on me, but we re-purposed some Cici & Ryann fabric with an old pair of $5 H&M dress-up butterfly wings you may remember from this shoot a looong time ago…and voila!

I also have to take a moment to talk about her hair, so thoughtfully and incredibly styled by The Hair Bar in Southlake. Did they not do an incredible job on ALL The girls? I speak from experience that this place is FABULOUS for hair and make-up and a must try!! This was NOT about turning 4 year old girls into 16 year old girls or exploiting them with hair and makeup…. it was simply an artistic effect to bring a whimsical and dreamy feel to the shoot and to the clothing. I love capturing a child simple and sweet and a la natural, but this was a commercial project and we were going for DREAMY!!! The sweet touches of flowers and braids and CURLS were just what I envisioned, and I am so thankful to the team at The Hair Bar for the amazing work that they did! And as a mom, I am completely swooning over how they spent over 1 hour curling each piece so perfectly and transforming her into this little doll baby. This is the sweet face I want to freeze in time. You better believe this is going up BIG in my home!!

Miss M is modeling the Sage Drop Waist Dress with the Lulu Necklace and Pink Ruffle Lacey Legs – I hear the dress is nearly sold out so if you like it, go shop now!!

Misty - She’s absolutely adorable!!! Her pictures are so personable and gorgeous. Way to go mom.

cici & ryann spring release – little miss a

Orange is one of my new favorite colors and I just adore the Jackie-O feel of this Chloe Mandarin Dress style by Cici & Ryann. It is such a refreshing spring look and style, and I can even see it transitioning well into fall with skinny jeans and tall boots. The sparkly rhinestone buttons are sure to win over your little girl! Doesn’t beautiful Miss A just make you want to try on this dress?!!

Shannon - There it is…the pic that made mama cry! I’m still so in love with them all! She looks so innocent!! LOVE THESE PICS and the ADORABLE DRESS!

cici & ryann dream release – baby m

You might remember this precious baby girl from here in the fall and look how big she is now! Miss M is walking now and was our sweet little baby model to show off the Chloe Chevron Lace Dress. If you are obsessed with chevron print items, then this is the dress for you! I love cuts like this because while it is a perfect little dress right now, it can easily grow with your girl and be paired with leggings or Lacey Legs and extend the life of your dress 2+ years!

Misty - LOVE all of the photos!!! You are so talented, and it’s an honor and a blessing to work with you.
